UFC 155 Round-by-Round Review: Junior dos Santos vs. Cain Velasquez

It's time to close out 2012 with the UFC heavyweight title on the line, as Junior dos Santos (15-1) faces Cain Velasquez (10-1) in a rematch of their 2011 contest. Herb Dean will be the referee for this contest.

Round 1: Velasquez coming right after dos Santos, grabs a leg and takes him down. Dos Santos reverses it and is back to his feet. Velasquez goes flying in for a takedown and is denied. Velasquez just coming right at dos Santos, hitting and looking for a takedown. Straight jab by Velasquez connects, and dos Santos answers with a jab, and another. Velasquez grabs a leg, but dos Santos pulls free. Exchange of leg kicks and this one has gone longer than the first. Right hand connects by Velasquez, who drops for another takedown but dos Santos gets away. Body shot by dos Santos, and a right by Velasquez. Straight right jab lands from Velasquez, and a nasty right by Velasquez. Nose of dos Santos could be broken, as it is bloody. Right by dos Santos just a glancing blow. Stiff left by Velasquez lands, and he connects with a knee to the body that slows dos Santos. Cut on the forehead of Velasquez, as they tie up against the cage. A total of 57 shots landed by both men through the first three minutes. Overhand left from Velasquez follows a kick. Velasquez has dos Santos tired, he drops him and pounces, landing several lefts. Another trip takedown and Velasquez is unloading with lefts to the face with a minute to go. Velasquez peppering him with lefts, and dos Santos gets up, but is quickly taken down again. Velasquez has a body lock and is teeing off, but dos Santos will survive the round.

Round 2: Velasquez with a series of lefts and rights, and then drops dos Santos with another takedown. Velasquez on his back, now working to the mount and is back to dos Santos' back with ease. Dos Santos gets up, and Velasquez takes him back down with brute strength. Velasquez stalking dos Santos, who is backing up and trying to recover. Another takedown with ease by Velasquez, as dos Santos looks broken and beaten with three minutes to go in the round. Velasquez with a big knee to the body of dos Santos, who is able to get to his feet. Trip takedown by Velasquez, who moves to control. Velasquez rolls into an armbar attempt, but dos Santos slips out and moves to his feet. Uppercut by Velasquez, who looks out of it on his feet with his eyes swelling shut. Velasquez landing everything as the round comes to an end.

Round 3: Right away, dos Santos is backing up, but he does land an uppercut. Velasquez with another takedown, as he holds a 165-33 advantage in strikes landed. Dos Santos landed a few nice shots early, but they were all backing up, and he isn't going to have enough power to knock Velasquez out backing up on his strikes. Velasquez with a big left hook and a right that connects, as he holds dos Santos up against the fence. Three minutes to go in this round, and dos Santos fires off a left, but eats an elbow in return. Uppercut by Velasquez connects. Body work by Velasquez, who is patiently picking dos Santos apart. Big knee by dos Santos, but Velasquez just takes it and lands a combo to the head of dos Santos. Kick to the body by Velasquez.

Round 4: Velasquez just picking dos Santos apart, kicking him at will and landing everything. Dos Santos answers with a left to the body, but Velasquez gets another takedown. Dos Santos, though, is right back up, getting away and fending off a takedown attempt. Dos Santos goes for a takedown against the fence, but Velasquez fights it off. A right jab followed by a takedown from Velasquez. Dos Santos gets back to his feet, avoiding the ground attacks by Velasquez. Monster left lands to the chin of dos Santos, who fires back with an elbow. Regardless of who you were rooting for, the heart of dos Santos to survive this attack has been incredible. Velasquez working the clinch, firing off lefts and rights at will. Elbow to the face lands by dos Santos, but Velasquez just keeps walking through the strikes. Single-leg attempt by Velasquez is fended off and we head to the fifth.

Round 5: Dos Santos, how he is still standing I do not know, fends off a takedown and is actually moving with some energy. Dos Santos fending off the takedown attempts of Velasquez, and landing rights at will now. Velasquez runs it but is unable to get the takedown, as dos Santos misses with a right. Straight left from Velasquez, who goes to the clinch with dos Santos. Three minutes left, and anyone who bet the distance in this one is likely feeling very lucky right now. Velasquez gets the takedown in the center of the Octagon, looking to tie him up and go for some ground-and-pound. Half-guard and Velasquez is smothering the champion with two minutes to go. Short elbows and dos Santos is covering up as Velasquez goes to the back. Dos Santos gets up and is still alive in this one, though likely on life support. Pair of rights by dos Santos with 60 seconds remaining. Velasquez throws a pair of wild strikes. Head kick by Velasquez out of nowhere. Just seconds remaining, and there is no questioning the heart of dos Santos ever after this one.
