UFC 153 Round-by-Round Review: Diego Brandao vs. Joey Gambino

We enter the featherweight division next, as former Ultimate Fighter winner Diego Brandao (19-8) takes on Joey Gambino (9-1). The referee will be Fernando Yamasaki.

Round 1: Big head kick by Brandao connects and he works some quick punches to Gambino on the ground. Gambino's able to slip out and get back to his feet. Brandao landing some stiff kicks to Gambino's lead leg, avoiding any punches with excellent head movement. Brandao's strikes are very tight, very controlled. Standing side-kick lands flush to the body of Gambino. Straight-right answer by Gambino to Brandao.

Another right makes Brandao re-assess his stance. High knee to lands by Brandao to the head of Gambino, and he follows up with a takedown. Brandao in side control, throwing some nice short elbows to the head of Gambino. Just over a minute to go in the round, as Gambino holds Brandao close to avoid punishment. Upkick gets Gambino up, but Brandao lands a kick of his own as Gambino stands. Cut over the right eye of Brandao, but he answers Gambino with a big left.

Round 2: Both fighters throw side kicks to start, as Gambino lands a combo and a jumping front-kick. Brandao drops Gambino with a right, and hesitates to follow up but eventually does, landing on top of Gambino. Brandao in full mount, but Gambino traps a leg before he can do any damage. Gambino gets full-guard, but Brandao lands a huge right to the face and an elbow. Gambino grabs Brandao's left arm and attempts an armbar, but Brandao quickly gets out of it. Left-hook to the body and a right kick to Gambino's lead leg buckles the leg of the American. Brandao trying for a takedown, getting it when he goes for the double-leg. Stiff left jab lands by Gambino.

Round 3: Gambino with blood coming from his nose as we start the final five minutes. Quick strikes by Gambino, as he seems to be the more aggressive fighter. Straight left connects from Gambino. Brandao counters Gambino, catches a leg kick and drops him with a right. Brandao wants Gambino up and he stands, screaming at him to get up. This is Brandao's first fight in Brazil since 2009, and it is obvious he wants the finish. Brandao with a trip takedown as Gambino tries to lock him up in guard. Gambino goes for a triangle, but Brandao avoids it and goes to side control with two minutes left in the fight. The referee steps in and stands them up with 90 seconds to go. Both fighters appear fatigued, as neither has made much of an effort to exchange. Gambino comes in with a pair of strikes that land, and connects on a body shot, as well.
