Jake Shields vs. Ed Herman

We will get to see Jake Shields (27-6-1) make his middleweight debut in the UFC, as the former 185-pound champion takes on Ed Herman (20-7). The third man inside the Octagon will be Adam Martinez.

Round 1: Shields with a nice leg kick, but Herman is landing some big blows. Herman attempts a takedown, but Shields slips his own takedown and Herman pops right back up. Shields throws a knee up and attempts a guillotine, but is unable to secure it. Shields takes Herman down and is on top of him against the fence.

Shields takes the back, but Herman is able to avoid the submission attempt. Herman with a knee to the body, and avoids another trip takedown attempt by Shields. Under two minutes to go and either fighter could steal this opening round with a strong finish. Knee to the body by Herman, as Shields releases a choke attempt and shoots in for a takedown. Herman is able to stay upright this time, and pushes Shields up against the fence. Shields with a knee to the body as the round comes to an end.

Round 2: Shields gets the takedown off the bat in the second, working in side control and landing some elbows. Shields attempting a kimura with just over three minutes to go, but Herman escapes it for now. Shields going back to work with the elbows, but is warned by the ref to watch the placement. Shields in a controlling position, landing lefts and rights while in the guard of Herman. On his back, Herman is attempting to hit Shields with some elbows, but he's unable to do much right now. Thirty seconds to go in the round, as Herman tries to roll to his stomach but is caught up Shields. Another quick elbow to the side of the head by Herman.

Round 3: Herman pushes Shields against the cage, but his corner has been telling him to stop trying to clinch. Shields breathing very heavy as he comes after Herman. Big uppercut by Herman misses, but Herman takes a hip toss and drops Shields. Another uppercut by Herman, who is starting to look more for strikes. Shields grabs a double and gets the takedown, and Herman looks frustrated on his back again. Shields controlling Herman now, locking up his left leg. Shields stretching Herman out, lands a nice left to the face as he works for an arm triangle. Elbow to the face by Shields as Herman attempts to get out but is unsuccessful. Less than a minute to go and Shields remains dominate in this grappling match.
