UFC 149 Round-by-Round Review: Urijah Faber vs. Renan Barao

Urijah Faber vs. Renan Barao for interim UFC bantamweight title

Our main event is up next, as Urijah Faber (26-5) and Renan Barao (30-1) compete for the interim UFC bantamweight title. The referee will be Mario Yamasaki, and this fight will not disappoint as the previous one did.

Round 1: Touch of gloves and Barao fires off a big kick to start. Faber doing a nice job of changing his stances, hoping to avoid the leg kicks that ate him up vs. Jose Aldo. Uppercut by Faber glances off face of Barao. Side kick by Barao, and he throws another kick. Lots of kicks by Barao, as expected, half-way through the round. Quick exchange, and Barao rocks Faber with a knee. Faber ducks a strike, but unable to follow up. No signs of nerves by Barao at all, very poised and calm inside the Octagon. Spinning kick misses by Barao, but he fires off a quick combo that keeps Faber from attacking. Leg kick by Barao near end of the first just misses.

Round 2: Faber with a funky stance, and Barao just throws a huge right that lands. Barao with a big left, and now Faber seems ready to go, landing a right of his own. Accidental poke of the eye halts the action just as it seemed to be picking up. Hopefully it doesn't take a Boetsch-Lombard approach. Flying knee by Barao hits partially, as Faber gains control. Faber throws a left, followed by a right, that lands. Inside leg kick by Faber this time and they return to the center of the Octagon. Barao shoots in, lands a punch to the face. Head kick just misses by Barao, moving the hair of "The California Kid." Under two minutes to go, and Faber with a right, but Barao with a power kick to the side of the head. Combo by Faber connects, and we have less than a minute to go. They exchange, with Faber landing more, but Barao better power. Leg kick by Barao and Faber has a limp starting in his stance. Another leg kick by Barao lands and Faber is starting to struggle to walk.

Round 3: Barao with a big combo, landing lefts, rights and a knee. Swelling forming on lead leg of Faber from Barao's kicks. Barao fends off takedown attempt, but drops Barao to the mat for a brief second. Front-kick to the body by Faber. Straight right, followed by a combo, courtesy of Faber. Barao lands another big blow, and tries for the knockout with a flying knee that is off the mark. Leg kick and a combo by Barao. Faber with a right, but it has no impact on Barao, who stuffs another takedown attempt. As he said earlier, Barao does have great wrestling for a Brazilian. Faber with an uppercut, and again, it does no damage. Another big kick by Barao lands. Barao continues to pepper away on the legs with kicks, weakening Faber greatly. Faber misses with several strikes, as he has no accuracy and no power.

Round 4: Faber tying Barao up, trying to get as close as he can to inflict damage. Blood coming out of the nose of Barao, likely from a stiff jab. Faber follows up with a jab to the stomach, but Barao is not scared to stand and trade against a one-legged Faber. Eye poke to Faber by Barao halts action, and allows groans from crowd to be heard. Faber lands a nice left-right combo, avoiding a leg kick attempt by Barao. Faber with a right, and fakes a takedown attempt. Head kick by Barao is blocked by Faber, but he comes right back with kicks to the lead leg again. With a minute to go in the round, Barao has landed over 100 significant strikes to just 50 by Faber. Knee to the body by Barao off a takedown attempt by Faber.

Round 5: Faber likely needs a finish, unless we see an interesting decision by the judges. Faber with a kick to the body, and he seems to have a sense of urgency to his plan, but still can't get close to land a big blow. Faber coming in after Barao, and the crowd is trying to push the fighters now with some energy unheard for a while. Head kick misses by Barao, but he lands a solid left as he exits. Three minutes to go, and it's Barao who fires off a combo on Faber. We go under two minutes and Barao lands a nasty left hook. Faber with a Superman punch, and follows up with a pair of nice lefts but takes another kick to the leg for his effort. Faber has a minute to do something, and Barao senses that now, landing a spinning back kick.
