Tyrone Spong (0-0) has decided to move beyond kickboxing and focus on MMA, for now, in part due to boredom. After coming to the U.S. and learning some other techniques such as jiu-jitsu from Rashad Evans (17-2-1) the motivation to compete again grew.
"For a long period I wasn't really that motivated with kickboxing," said Spong to MMA Fighting. "K-1 was going bad. I had accomplished so much in kickboxing, but just lost the motivation a little bit."
Spong makes his MMA debut against Travis Bartlett (7-2) as a light heavyweight at the first World Series of Fighting (WSOF) show at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. The fight will air on the main card, which can be seen on the NBC Sports Network on November 3.
Initially Spong was not scheduled to be part of the main card, but officials gave him the nod to compete to on the televised part of the show. While Spong may have no MMA fights to his name he isn't worried.
"I know I'm not the world's best MMA fighter, but I am one of the world's best fighters," said Spong. "A lot people are going to tune in to watch me fight. It makes sense."
Spong's last kickboxing match was in June of this year, where he picked up his fourth win a row. While he is focused on MMA right now, Spong hasn't given up on the idea that he might return to kickboxing.
"Kickboxing gives me the opportunity to do both," said Spong. "To make good money in kickboxing and to build up a record in MMA and get some experience in MMA. Then we'll see what happens."
Following his debut for WSOF, Spong isn't sure where he is headed next. He noted that top name MMA companies are interested in him, but he wants to be more prepared before making any major decisions.
"I know for sure that some big organizations are going to start knocking on my door," said Spong. "They want me already, but I still want to have a little bit of a record and build up some experience."
