Tyler Hansbrough’s Mom, Tami, Resigns at North Carolina

Earlier this week Tyler Hansbrough’s mother, Tami, made headlines when news broke of her allegedly taking personal trips with North Carolina money. Details regarding what exactly she did and specifically how much money she burned through were scarce, however, there was enough smoke in the air to assume that we’d see the fire soon enough.

Unsurprisingly, on Wednesday, Tami Hansbrough resigned from her fundraising post at North Carolina.

Tami Hansbrough, the mother of former North Carolina basketball All-America Tyler Hansbrough, resigned her position as a school fundraiser Wednesday as the school continued to study trips she took with Matt Kupec, UNC's vice chancellor for university advancement.

Kupec, a former Tar Heels quarterback, resigned Sunday night after an internal review showed he had charged personal trips with Hansbrough to the university. Hansbrough had been placed on administrative leave.

What brought on the decision to quit besides just the obvious fact that this story wasn’t going to go away? Most likely the details that were slowly beginning to leak out about how precisely the funds were used.

As reported today by the Charlotte Observer:

The N&O confirmed that Hansbrough and Kupec traveled together at least 25 times since May 2010. Those trips included two nights on the Outer Banks over the July Fourth weekend in 2010, a fall trip to Asheville that year, several nights in Montana in 2011, and a trip to Naples, Fla., in 2012.

Moon confirmed that Kupec and Tami Hansbrough were in Charlotte in 2011 and Memphis, Tenn., in 2012. Those trips coincided with NBA games for Tyler Hansbrough, who now plays for the Indiana Pacers.

She said it’s not clear whether all of the travel was inappropriate.

Given how quick Tami Hansbrough was to call it quits, we can probably guess that a lot of it was in fact inappropriate.

On the bright side, at least this is one scandal North Carolina can cross off its list.
