Titans QB Zach Mettenberger Confident He Can Beat Out Draft Competition

With the NFL combine taking place, many questions arise about the NFL draft in April. One question is an important one for the Tennessee Titans, which hold the second overall pick.

Arguably, the top two players in the draft are quarterbacks Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston. With Tampa Bay picking first, they will most likely take one of the two, especially after getting rid of Josh McCown. Will the Titans take the remaining of the two? Tennessee drafted Louisiana State University's star quarterback, Zach Mettenberger in last year’s draft, and could choose to stick with him or pick one of the last two Heisman Trophy winners instead.

Regardless of what the Titans choose to do, Mettenberger is confident he can beat out either one of the other quarterbacks.

“They are obviously very talented guys,” Mettenberger said. “If they were here I think they would say the same thing: If we had to compete out there, I think I’d beat them out.”

Who can blame him for saying that? The problem would be if he didn’t think that. Titans’ offensive tackle agrees with the statement.

“I think any person that doesn’t say that is not going to be successful,” Taylor Lewan said. “There are only so many positions in the NFL you can be a part of. If another guy comes in that’s a first-round pick or a second-round pick or a higher pick than you were, you either fold it up or you can take that adversity and thrive with it.”

In his first year in the NFL, Mettenberger started six games before injuring his shoulder. He threw eight touchdowns, seven interceptions and compiled 1,412 passing yards in 2014. Despite going 0-6 as a starter, Mettenberger could give the team other options as to what to do in the draft.

It will be interesting to see what the Titans choose to do with the No. 2 pick. Will they pick Mariota or Winston? Or will they stick to Mettenbeger and trade their pick to someone who needs a quarterback in return for other needs the team may have?

It’s a difficult situation for the team, but a good problem to have with the No. 2 pick in your pocket. Titans, you’re almost on the clock.
