It was supposed to be a game that told us everything we needed to know about Team USA.
Well, it sort of did.
Without really breaking a sweat, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and the rest of the guys who have been derided for the past two weeks for sharing a flag with the 1992 Dream Team demolished Spain 100-78 on Tuesday afternoon.
When it was all said and done, Anthony finished with 27 points (23 of which came in the first half) and James finished with 25. Kevin Durant pitched in 13, too.
A few things to chew on as we head into the Olympics this week: 1.) USA trailed early in the game before eventually taking the lead and never looking back; get used to this team being prone to falling behind early sometimes, particularly if their shots aren’t falling. It’s just the way they’re built. 2.) Spain lost in similarly lackluster fashion four years ago, then they came back to give the U.S. a real battle when it mattered most. 3.) Marc Gasol didn’t play yesterday, so Spain couldn’t take advantage of their biggest advantage over the Americans.
The U.S. will unquestionably still win gold in London – but it probably won’t come as easily as this latest victory did.
