Despite lowering their blackout threshold to 85%, the Tampa Bay Bucs have failed to sell enough tickets to avoid a television blackout for the season opener.
We’ve repeatedly argued that these blackouts are unethical and unfair. But they are also counterproductive.
It should come as no surprise to the NFL and the Bucs that if you withhold your product from your customers, they will lose interest.
The NFL seems to think blackouts motivate fans to buy tickets despite the fact that top sports economists say they do absolutely nothing to increase ticket sales.
So now many poor, disabled and elderly fans are being needlessly blacked out from yet another season opener and likely more games this season.
Congrats, NFL. You’ve proven that blacking out fans kills your fan base. But go ahead, keep doing it…
