It is pretty safe to assume that in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex MMA is the combat sport of preference. The standing-room only crowd that gathered at last week’s XKO 10 show in Arlington speaks volumes to his. People in these parts love their MMA, and love their bog events, which is why Strikeforce’ s foray into the North Texas market this June will be such a landmark event. Sure, the UFC inarguably set the bar pretty high when they hosted UFC 103 at the American Airlines Center back in September 2009.
On June 18, Strikeforce will up the ante when it holds the second leg of their heavyweight grand prix opening round bracket. While UFC 103 did huge numbers here in Dallas, the fact of the matter is that this Strikeforce card is head and tails better in terms of talent and star power on the card. Headlining the event will be the opening round bracket bout between Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem (34-11) taking on Fabricio Wedum (14-4-1)in a non-title affair. As if that fight wasn’t intriguing enough, the Strikeforce card will also feature the other first round bracket matchup between Josh Barnett (26-5) and Brett Rodgers (11-2) in what is sure to be a hellacious fight.
Strikeforce recently announced that they have added heavyweight bouts featuring Daniel Cormier taking on Shane Del Rosario and perianal underdog Chad Griggs taking on Valentijn Overeem. Also featured on the June 18 promotion will be the highly-anticipated return of former 145-lbs Strikeforce women’s champion Gina Carano (7-1). Carano, who was born here in North Texas, last fought in August 2009 where she suffered a first-round TKO loss to Christiane “Cyborg” Santos.
While Strikeforce has struggled to capture the imagination of the American MMA fan when juxtaposed against the mighty UFC, the fact that the aforementioned UFC has acquired Strikeforce may mean that this card could be the biggest MMA event to hit Texas.
