Streak Ends at 90: UConn Women Lose to Stanford

The historical, record-breaking winning streak set by the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team is officially over.

It took Stanford one game to dismantle a streak that took a UConn squad two years, and 90 victories to build.

On Thursday night in Palo Alto, California, Stanford defeated the top-ranked Connecticut team 71-59, officially ending the longest NCAA Division I winning streak in men or women's basketball history.

This loss, of course, comes a mere nine days after UConn got their 89th straight win in a blowout win over Florida State. That win over Florida State allowed them to surpass the 88-game winning streak set by John Wooden’s UCLA men's teams from 1971 to 1974.

Stanford carried the interesting distinction of having been the last team to defeat UConn prior to this extended winning streak in an April 2008 game during the Final Four.

UConn’s 90th win of the streak came on Tuesday in an 85-42 romp over Pacific.
