Boxing trainer Freddie Roach has upped the pace in Manny Pacquiao’s training sessions and made things more interesting by offering $1,000 to any sparring partner who can knock down the WBO Welterweight Champion in a sparring session.
The first boxer who hopes to pick up a bit of extra spending money is undefeated super welterweight Vanes Martirosyan, who is heading over to the Philippines to help Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KOs) prepare for his upcoming title defence against Mexico’s Antonio Margarito (38-6, 27kos) in Arlington, Texas on Nov. 13.
Martirosyan, a U.S-based Armenian with a record of 28-0 with 17 KOs, told Boxing Scene that he’s up for the challenge, and he’ll be the first to drop Pacquiao on the seat of his pants. He added that he hopes Pacquiao and Roach don’t take his comments the wrong way, but he just wants to test himself against the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world.
He said he has a lot of respect for Pacquiao and has learned a lot from him, but feels he’s up to the task and is looking forward to seeing how he performs in the ring with such a great fighter.
Filipino boxing press reported that Roach wanted to spice things up in the current sparring sessions and thought a $1,000 bonus for decking the southpaw Pacquiao could be the answer. Roach wants the sparring partners to be motivated against the champion and to test him thoroughly when working out with him.
However, Pacquiao’s work-out mates may not need any extra incentive and they definitely don’t need the money as they’re some of the best boxers in the world in their own right. Pacquio’s sparring partners include WBA Jr. Welterweight Champion Amir Khan of England, American Glen Tapia, and Mexico’s Michael Medina.
This isn’t the first time Roach has offered a reward to anybody who can drop Pacquiao -- he's made the same offer back in 2008 when he was training for his fight against Oscar de la Hoya in 2008. However, nobody managed to do it.
Sportsbook William Hill has the odds of Pacquiao beating Margarito at 4/23 with a Margarito win at 15/4.
