Perhaps it just runs in the family. Most soccer fans know about the bust up between Chelsea captain John Terry and his former teammate Wayne Bridge, last year. Bridge refused to play alongside Terry for England at the World Cup in Africa this summer because he accused Terry of having an affair with an ex-girlfriend of his. The news of the affair cost Terry the captain’s armband with the English national team.
Well, it appears John Terry’s older brother Paul also has a wandering eye, but his affair has resulted in tragedy. Terry’s teammate at Conference club Rushden and Diamonds, 24-year-old Dale Roberts, hanged himself on Dec. 14, after his 25-year-old fiancé Lindsay Cowen left him for Paul Terry.
Paul Terry was staying at the young couple’s home in Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire and apparently slept with Cowen while taking advantage of Roberts’ hospitality. She left Roberts, the team’s goalkeeper, in May and the keeper refused to play in the same squad as Terry after learning about the affair. The club stepped in and Terry was quickly released from the team and ended up signing with Darlington in August.
Northamptonshire police said the death wasn’t suspicious and it looks like Roberts committed suicide because he couldn’t come to terms with losing Cowen. A source close to the situation said Cowen and Terry hooked up while Terry was a guest in her home when Roberts was injured. They added that Terry was released by the club because of the affair and nobody else in the squad wanted to play alongside him.
When Cowen admitted the affair to Roberts, he said the couple split up and he was having a hard time dealing with it. He admitted it was bad enough she slept with someone else, but doing it with a teammate made it even worse.
When Rushden and Diamonds heard the news of Roberts’ death they released the following statement: 'It is with great sadness that this afternoon our England C goalkeeper Dale Roberts passed away, our thoughts and prayers at this time go to his parents, family and friends.' The club also postponed its Dec. 18 game against Eastbourne Borough out of respect to Roberts’ family.
Roberts also used to play for Nottingham Forest and was voted as the England C player of the season for 2009-10.
