Analysis: College Football’s Conference Races

We did part one of our conference standings recap earlier this week. Here we go for round two:

Mid American Conference, East

While you probably don’t really care about the MAC title, there is a mad dash going on for this division title, as Temple, Ohio, and Miami (Ohio) are all 5-1 in the league. Temple, who used to be the butt of every college football joke on the planet, hosts Ohio U. this weekend. Let’s also hear it for the mighty Akron Zips, who enters this weekend 0-for-the-season.

Mid American Conference, West

Jerry Kill’s Northern Illinois squad is 6-0 in MAC play, and fresh off a 35-point beat down of 2nd place Toledo on Tuesday night. Toledo also came into that game undefeated in the conference.

Mountain West

The unofficial BCS league appears to be wrapped up by TCU after their thrashing of Utah, but the Frogs still have to play San Diego State this weekend. The Aztecs are 4-1 in the league, and could win the Mountain West if they could somehow pull the upset in Fort Worth. TCU’s defense is unreal, and as long as they can hold their own against SDSU and New Mexico, they should find themselves somewhere in the BCS madness. Just what bowl they wind up in is probably more up to the other teams near the top of the rankings.

The undefeated Ducks essentially have a two-game lead on the field, as they have already beaten second place Stanford. While the Ducks schedule to close the season is pretty tough (@Cal, Arizona, @OR State), they should find themselves with a conference crown even if they can’t get into the national title game. Anything short of a title shot, however, will be considered a failure for Chip Kelly’s high-octane squad.

SEC East

South Carolina and Florida will duke it out Saturday night in The Swamp for a shot at the conference title game. The Cocks have never made it that far, while the Gators will probably consider the season a disappointment even if they do get past Spurrier and Co.

SEC West

Football’s toughest division has five teams over .500 in league play, led by undefeated Auburn. If Cam Newton can survive the smear campaign/exposure of truth that is going on around him, the Tigers should march their way all the way to the title game.

Sun Belt

Who is even in the Sun Belt, any way? While our local WKU Hilltoppers are still on the bottom of the standings, they did crack the win column earlier this year. Troy and Florida International are currently at the top of the race, with 4-1 and 3-1 records in conference play, respectively.

Boise State is currently undefeated, but still have four games left to play, with two games against teams that have just one loss in the conference in Nevada and Fresno State. The Nevada game is on the Friday after Thanksgiving in Reno, and could be the Broncos biggest test since September.
