Showtime Releases Statement Regarding Scrapped Strikeforce Event

Showtime has remained quiet in regards to the decision to not air this coming Saturday's Strikeforce card after Gilbert Melendez went down with an injury. Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said the promotion scrapped the entire event after Showtime said they would not air it minus Melendez.

Well, Showtime released a statement late Monday night concerning the card. Thanks to MMAjunkie.com for supplying the release.

On Friday night, Strikeforce informed us that lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez had sustained an injury and would not be able to compete in their Saturday, Sept. 29 card. Without our headline fighter and main event or a marquee undercard, we reluctantly informed Strikeforce that we could not continue with plans for the telecast.

The card was scheduled to feature Melendez vs. Pat Healy in the main event, with other main card fights boasting Guto Inocente-Gian Villante, Josh Thomson-Caros Fodor, and Jorge Santiago vs. Quinn Mulhern.

Thomson offered to step in and face Healy, but the decision was made to cancel the card.
