Even though we beat the new people’s champion -- Sergio Martinez -- to the punch when it came to calling out pop star Manny Pacquiao, you still have to appreciate Martinez’s bluntness. In a recent interview (as transcribed by Boxing Scene), here is what the champ had to say:
“While he continues to fight with opponents who have no chance of winning, and I continue to fight against the best – one day I will [become the best pound for pound fighter].
"Because I know I have to face the reality that it’s almost impossible [to fight him] given the height and weight. It makes more sense to go after fights with Miguel Cotto or Floyd Mayweather. Against either of them, I’d love to show that I’m at an amazing point in my career.”
Needless to say, the fact that Pacquiao cherry picks his opponents has been well documented. Perhaps if more boxers like Martinez stand up and call the Filipino paper champ out on his nonsense, he’ll finally return to his roots and actually fight a capable opponent in his prime.
We can only dream…
