Ricky Burns will defend his WBO lightweight title against Dagenham’s Kevin Mitchell in September after the pair finally agreed terms for a domestic superfight.
The duel, which will be held in Glasgow on September 22nd will mark the end of long running speculation linking the two-weight world champion Burns to the unpredictable Mitchell.
The date secures an impressive career resurrection for Mitchell who was blown into a black hole when stopped by Australian Michael Katsidis in May 2010.
However, Mitchell pulled himself from the brink of alcoholism to stop previously undefeated John Murray in a 2011 fight of the year contender.
For Burns, the fight marks another fight in an impressive run for the Scotsman who will have faced Roman Martinez, Nicky Cook, Paulus Moses, Katsidis and Mitchell all in the space of two years.
The fight had looked set to feature on the undercard of David Haye’s July showdown with Dereck Chisora, however, the threat of BBBofC action against those looking to participate in the controversial Frank Warren show has lead to Burns- Mitchell being pushed back two months.
