Ricky Burns Takes Juan Manuel Marquez’s WBO Title

Scotland’s Ricky Burns has been formally instated as the WBO’s lightweight champion after previous belt holder, Juan Manuel Marquez, vacated the title.

Burns (33-2) captured the interim version of the title with a captivating points win over Australian Michael Katsidis in November. Marquez has been weighing up his options since himself dropping a highly contentious decision against eight-weight world champion Manny Pacquiao in a fight for the WBO’s version of the welterweight crown.

The move paves the way for a rematch between the pair, however with speculation still fresh surrounding Pacquiao and undefeated American Floyd Mayweather, the waters for both fighters remain muddied.

For Burns, the ascension distinguishes the Coatbridge born fighter as not only a two weight world champion, but also as only Britain’s second reigning world champion after light heavyweight Nathan Cleverly.

The Scot will defend his new crown for the first time when he takes on Paulus Moses on March 10.
