Report: Warriors Will Make Last Second Push For Kerr If Van Gundy Goes To Detroit

Many in NBA circles expected Stan Van Gundy to end up as the next coach of the Golden State Warriors, but it now looks like that speculation may not come to fruition. Not only have talks between Van Gundy and the Warriors reportedly stalled, but there looks to be a new leader in the Van Gundy sweepstakes: the Pistons.

Pistons management reportedly went to Van Gundy and offered him both their head coaching position and full control of all basketball operations. When Van Gundy asked for the same perks from the Warriors, they said they couldn’t do that.

The Warriors are an infinitely more talented team than the Pistons right now, but the allure of having total control of a roster might just be enough to convince Van Gundy to head up to Bankrupt City. After having just about zero control over basketball decisions under Pat Riley in Miami, Van Gundy would likely love the opportunity to shape his own squad.

If – and all these reports are full of ifs right now – Van Gundy goes to Detroit, the Warriors are reportedly prepared to make a big push to pry Steve Kerr away from the Knicks. Golden State said yesterday that they were dropping Kerr from their candidates list because they believe he is essentially the Knicks coach already, but that could change if Van Gundy signs with the Pistons.

Warriors owner Joe Lacob is reportedly ready to throw his checkbook at Kerr if he can't land his top choice (Van Gundy). This would make things interesting since the Knicks are trying to avoid paying Kerr big money as a first time head coach.

As always at this time of the year, remember that your own speculation is about as reliable as many of these reports. Expect most of these moves to go down by Thursday, though, since teams will want their head coaches in place by the start of the NBA Draft combine.
