Following the release of former prized free agent Cullen Jenkins and aging tackle Mike Patterson the Philadelphia Eagles are currently set to hit free agency with over $33M in cap space. That’s before they either release or restructure the contract of free agent bust Nnamdi Asomugha. Don’t think their roster trimming is done just yet though. Not by any stretch of the imagination. Don’t be surprised if even more members of the supposed “dream team” are on their way out. Below I will list some of the likely candidates.
Nnamdi Asomugha: Leading the charge in absurd contracts handed out nearly two offseasons ago, I’d say it’s best the Eagles just cut their losses and ties with Asomugha. A release would result in the Eagles saving $11.3M against the cap. It’s not that he isn’t a bad corner, he’s just not nearly as good as he convinced the world he was going into free agency. It also seems like he is in every highlight package showing their porous secondary getting burnt.
Nate Allen: Speaking of that porous secondary... To say Nate Allen is a draft bust is somewhat of an understatement. He is horrible in coverage, he is horrible in run support and what I guess I’m trying to get at is that he’s just plain horrible. Can’t think of anything he does well. Releasing Allen would only clear up $600,000 in cap space, but it also opens up a roster spot.
Danny Watkins: It’s a little early to label this Canadian a bust, but his career is about one season away from hitting that point. Expectations were high when the Eagles drafted him out of the first round, but he’s just another in a series of underperforming offensive linemen on this team. It’s not all that likely they will either release or restructure his contract, but it’s entirely possible. He hasn’t even made it as a full time starter yet.
