Just a day ago, Florida Marlins all-world, no-hustle shortstop Hanley Ramirez was benched after he dogged it in the field the night before. He tried to run into the outfield to make a play on a short bloop, but couldn’t get there in time and then decided he liked soccer better.
The ball dropped and he Pele’ed one into the left-field corner. Sounds bad, right? Well it’s worse than that because he pulled a For Who, For What and lollygagged after the ball.
Well, today Hanley is singing a different tune. He says now that he will apologize to his Marlins teammates and his manager Fredi Gonzalez before Wednesday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals.
“I regret that this has gotten so ugly, it was not my intention to create a distraction,” Ramirez told ESPNDeportes.com.
Gonzalez told a Miami radio station earlier this morning that he “would be surprised” if Ramirez wasn’t in the lineup for Wednesday’s game. Guess it’s tough to bench a guy when they are so clearly your best position player.
