Rafael Nadal’s highly anticipated return has been delayed by an unfortunately timed stomach virus.
After a seven month layoff, Nadal was scheduled to partake in an exhibition tennis tournament this coming Thursday in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Had he actually played, it would have been the Spaniard’s first bit of action since last June’s surprising defeat to Lukas Rosol at Wimbledon.
You will recall, tendinitis in his knee prevented Nadal from competing in the 2012 London Olympics, U.S. Open and the Davis Cup final.
After his lengthy break from tennis, Nadal figured that he may as well wait until he is fully healthy before making his triumphant return.
"My rehab has gone well, my knee feels good and I was looking forward to competing," he said recently (via the Los Angeles Times).
On Wednesday, Mubadala Tennis World Championship organizers announced that No. 11 ranked Nicolas Almagro would step in for Nadal.
