The 2012 NHL Conference quarterfinals brought us 3 seven game series and 2 six game series, with two of the game sevens going into sudden death. The drama bar high for the Conference Semis and for the most part they failed (only fans of the team doing the sweeping like 4-0, unless of course you bet on a sweep. I don’t spend money on such things, it ends badly).
One of my fondest non-Sabres hockey memories of my youth was sitting up with my dad and brother watching the Easter Epic, a four overtime Game Seven between the Islanders and Capitals. Kelly Hrudey and Bob Mason were stalwarts in net, Easter Mass was a rough one the next day.
Thankfully the Rags and Caps pushed their series to game seven, which I plan watching with no attachments and plenty of beer this Saturday, and hopefully Sunday morning. 2, 3 OTs would help cleanse this disappointment of the round, boys.
If I had my choice I would go for a Jersey-Rangers tilt due to the history and disdain between the franchises and fan bases. I am hitching my backing to whichever team emerges from the West. Given the way Mike Smith and Jonathan Quick have played this post-season either squad could hoist the Cup.
