With former Warriors coaching frontrunner, Mike Brown agreeing to coach the Lakers, the Warriors now have one more experienced coach off the table.
So where does that leave them?
I know that the name Rick Adelman is being floated around as a legitimate option, but I'm not really seeing it. Given the Warriors recent experience re-hiring an old coach (Don Nelson), I just don't see them doing that again - even though Adelman does fit some of what the Warriors are looking for.
Current Laker assistant coach Brian Shaw and Mavs assistant Dwane Casey are both names that keep coming up, but firing Keith Smart only to hire another assistant that's never been a head coach doesn't make a lot of sense to me... no matter what staffs they are on.
Jeff Van Gundy and Jerry Sloan both declined to interview (we didn't want them anyway) and I'm not buying into Kevin McHale as a viable option having only coached the Timberwolves and compiling a 39-55 record.
That leaves us to who I believe is the front-runner and utlimate winner of the head coaching job for the Warriors. If I were a betting man (and oftentimes I am), today I would put money on Boston Celtics assistant and former New Jersey Nets head coach, Lawrence Frank becoming the next head coach of the Golden State Warriors.
Not only does Lawrence Frank have head coaching experience but he has had success as a head coach, taking the Nets to the playoffs three years in a row. He has also assisted under Byron Scott, Brian Hill and most recently under Doc Rivers focused on defense - isn't that something the Warriors need a little help with?
Let us not forget the Joe Lacob connection as well. Frank was an assistant for Doc while Lacob was part of the Celtics ownership team. I also believe that Lawrence Frank will be able to get the most out of the team the way it's currently configured, whereas someone like Mike Brown would need lots of new pieces in order to make his vision and style compatible.
Mark my words... Lawrence Frank will be the next head coach of the Golden State Warriors.
