We all get splinters every now and then -- they are more annoying than painful. However, a world champion cyclist suffered a splinter during a race that was far more painful than annoying. That's because the splinter was around eight inches long.

Azizulhasni Awang was on the final lap of the Track World Cup in Manchester, England on Saturday when he and three other riders crashed. A shard of wood from the track pierced his calf.

Awang was able to get back on his bike and finish third in the race. However he collapsed in agony after crossing the finish line.

The Malaysian had surgery to remove the splinter. He posted on Twitter:

Operation done. Splinter taken out cleanly. Thanks for the prayer n support.

Awang is expected to make a full recovery, but not soon enough to ride in next month's World Championships.

Awang has won World Championship medals in the last two seasons and is well renowned for his trademark wheelie as he crosses the line.
