Phillies Want Werth?

As you can imagine, Ruben Amaro, Jr.’s end-of-year press conference was peppered with questions about rightfielder Jayson Werth, who is a free agent this offseason. Werth will probably command a decent-sized contract, especially with Scott Boras running the show.

But, the Phillies say that they want Werth to return, but, according to Amaro, that will “depend on what the ask is” and “how it will affect other things.”

“What is going to drive the bus is Jayson and Scott,” Amaro said of getting a deal done soon. “Typically these things don’t move particularly quickly.”

“Jayson had a good year. It wasn’t an extraordinary year,” Amaro said. “He had a tough time with men in scoring position. It wasn’t as productive a year as he had in the past. If he is not with us, there are players that we can acquire and or we have in our own organization that can help us be as consistent.”

The Phillies say that they will have the money to get a deal done, but that doesn’t mean that it will happen. All it takes is one Seattle Mariners offer to pay him some $17 million a year and the Phils will probably justifiably drop out of the running. Werth is certainly a nice player that brings a lot to the table offensively and defensively, but let’s not get crazy here.

In all reality, some other team will most likely overpay the 31-year old.
