Soccer may be the most popular game in the world, but it's far from the sport of choice in America. Want proof? Clint Dempsey, captain of the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team (USMNT), can walk down a busy street and go practically unnoticed. As this ESPN video shows, he can even interview people and tell them his name without them figuring out who he is.
Dempsey walked around with a camera crew recently interviewing people about the USMNT. Not only do people not know very basic information about the U.S. team, but many of them don’t have a clue they're talking to the team's captain.
One man in the video knows of Clint Dempsey, but obviously has no clue what he looks like. After the man says Dempsey is a good player, Dempsey introduces himself to the interviewee as Clint. Even then, the man fails to realize who he is talking to.
America’s relationship with our soccer stars is a lot like our relationship with presidents: we love them every four years, but in between? Eh, they’re just alright.
