Here is what we know for certain: Manny Pacquiao will finally fight Juan Manuel Marquez in what is billed to be an epic third-part conclusion to their long-standing rivalry. There will be a lot of money tied up in the decision on who gets to broadcast the pay-per-view (PPV), with anywhere from $10 to $15 million being very realistic figures to keep an eye on. And, above all else, it will be the Filipino superstar and his stable who are setting the terms for the coming fight.
Pacquiao’s promoter, the world renowned Bob Arum, has said several times over the past week that a decision regarding which network will carry his fighter’s next PPV is still up in the air. Via his Twitter account on Saturday, Arum remarked that the offer presented by HBO was impressive, and that he expects Showtime to better it for the rights to Pacquiao vs. Marquez III.
Arum and Showtime’s relationship can be traced back to Pacquiao’s May bout against “Sugar” Shane Mosley, which the company paid approximately $10 million to broadcast. Some estimates for this coming match, however, are saying that $15 million is a more realistic figure given the history between the fighters and HBO’s newfound apparent interest in being involved.
In that snoozer of a battle between Pacquiao and Mosley, mind you, the Filipino superstar and his over-the-hill counterpart were able to generate 1.4 million PPV buys. Given the anticipation surrounding Pacquiao finally deciding to square off against a fighter that gave him trouble not once, but twice, Arum and Co. fully expect to blow past the 1.5 million buys wall and onto a fresh new plateau.
It’s also safe to assume that Pacquiao will garner a little more than the $20 million guaranteed and approximately $10 million in PPV sales that he earned from his match versus Mosley.
Pacquiao and Marquez are slated to meet on November 12 of this year.
