Nnamdi Asomugha to 49ers or Saints?

Publish date:

Nnamdi Asomugha enjoyed the best years of his career in the Bay Area, so talk of him seriously contemplating signing with the San Francisco 49ers makes a lot of sense. During his stint with the Oakland Raiders from 2003-2010, Asomugha developed a reputation for being someone who could shut down entire sides of fields just with his mere presence. Following a disastrous two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, returning to a familiar area and joining a team that already boasts a fantastic defense would be a very smart career move.

Interestingly enough, though, the 49ers aren’t the only team Asomugha is considering. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the 31-year-old is also contemplating linking up with the New Orleans Saints.

Unlike San Francisco, New Orleans boasts the worst defense in the NFL. However, the lack of legitimate star power on that Saints unit may allow Asomugha more playing time than he would get with the 49ers – something that’s obviously appealing to a guy two years removed from being the hottest free agent cornerback on the market.

Per CBS Sports, if the Saints are able to bring in Asomugha, they’ll likely release either Patrick Robinson or Jabari Greer to make room for him.

Regardless of who he signs with, Asomugha is in line to make $4 million next year from the Philadelphia Eagles.
