The NHL and the NHLPA are refusing to meet and the stalemate is about to claim its biggest victim — the NHL’s most popular regular season game, the Winter Classic.
This year’s Winter Classic is scheduled to take place at the “Big House,” the University of Michigan’s football stadium on January 1. This would mean more than 100,000 fans would be able to see the Detroit Red Wings take on the Toronto Maple Leafs in an amazing outdoor atmosphere.
But the NHL’s contract with the University of Michigan allows them to walk away from the $3 million contract for the stadium and forfeit only an initial deposit of $100,000 if the league lets UM know by Friday.
Since there appear to be no signs of resolution anytime soon, expect that announcement to come any minute.
