You gotta love Rex Ryan. No matter what the circumstance, no matter how silly it may seem, the guy doesn’t change his colors. Now I’m not saying that it’s impossible for the New York Jets to make the Super Bowl, as a Jets fan there’s nothing more that I’d like to see. Let’s be both polite and realistic however and simply say that they were not the odds on favorite to reach the big game before the season started; and with Darrelle Revis now on the shelf for the remainder of the year, the odds of that happening just became less likely, not more.
Rex has never been one to let little things like facts or reality get in the way of a good press quote though. On Friday afternoon the slimed down Ryan told the press that he didn’t put Darrelle Revis on IR yet because there’s a chance that he might be able to be healthy enough to play in the Super Bowl. Yes that’s right, at 2-1 and facing the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday, Rex is thinking ahead to the composition of his roster for Super Bowl Sunday.
I for one think that Revis will definitely be available for the Super Bowl; available to watch it…
“I’ve talked to Darrelle and all that,” Ryan said of his All-Pro cornerback who tore his left ACL at Miami last Sunday. “Let’s see what happens when he goes through surgery. Because if there’s that 0.0002 percent chance that he can play in a Super Bowl or something, why would you take that option away from him?”
“I think it’s a thing where let’s get through the surgery. You don’t have to make a snap decision, ‘Let’s just place him on IR, replace him with somebody,’” Rex said. “If you’re fortunate enough to get there, if he does well with the surgery, is healthy for that, is targeted for that, why wouldn’t you believe in yourself enough to give yourself that opportunity.”
“I just know our trainers are confident that Darrelle’s going to come back from this injury at some point, they think he’s going to be 100 percent. Now when that time is, I don’t know. I feel great about that and we feel great about that, being Jets fans and in this organization. I think we’ll have a much better understanding to it after he has the surgery.”
If the Jets are going to play in Super Bowl XLVII, there’s a good chance that their opponent could be the team they play this weekend, the 49ers, who are clearly one of the best teams in the NFC. I’m guessing Rex will claim that they should be favorites in that game because they wouldn’t have played the Jets with Revis the first time around…
