NFL Rumors: Cam Newton Held Up Team After Falcons-Panthers Because He Was Moping in the Locker Room

Cam Newton was the NFL’s golden boy after his shockingly good rookie campaign.

Based on everything he accomplished last year, heading into this season, everyone just naturally expected him to take the next step and become of the league’s elite passers.

Yeah, that hasn’t happened.

Newton’s numbers this year haven’t been bad, per se. Aside from one undeniably awful showing against the New York Giants, he has actually performed in keeping with the reasonable expectations folks had for him this season. His team, however, hasn’t been as lucky. So far the Panthers are 1-3, and apparently the losing is starting to get to everyone – including Cam.

Following Carolina's latest defeat (at the hands of the Atlanta Falcons), ESPN’s Ed Werder (via Larry Brown Sports) reported that Newton held up the team because he needed a little extra time to sulk in the locker room.

For what it’s worth, Newton did at least accept responsibility for the loss after the game.

“In this league, you have to protect the football,” Newton said, according to the Charlotte Observer (via National Football Post). “That was a key focus going into this game. I fumbled. It’s a lot of guys that’s trusting the ball carrier, whoever it is in any case, and I was the ball carrier on that particular play to get the job done. I failed.

“There’s no finger pointing in this game, especially not on this team,” Newton said. “So if you expect me to point somebody out, or do this, if anything you can point the finger at me.”

This is all a part of growing up. The Panthers have a stud in Newton, regardless of how this season goes. Every star goes through turbulence at some point in their careers – Cam just needs to hold on tight and wait for this unlucky streak to pass.
