Atlanta Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff appeared on 790 the Zone in Atlanta this morning and announced that corner back Brent Grimes would receive the teams franchise tag. The franchise tag will cost the Falcons $10.2 million for the 2012 season.
Grimes only played in 12 games during the regular season and missed the team's playoff appearance with a knee injury but was clearly Atlanta's best secondary player and consistently shut down opposing teams' #1 receiver.
This is the right move by the Falcons. Without Grimes the Falcons could've been looking at another hole to fill, especially considering the lackluster play of Dunta Robinson. With Grimes now in the fold for the upcoming season, the Falcons now turn their attention to keeping LB Curtis Lofton, and looking for a potential replacement for DE John Abraham.
In an update to this story, AJC Falcons beat writer D Orlando Ledbetter reports that Grimes agent said that Grimes will not sign Falcons tender.
“We have no plans to sign the tag at this time,” said Ben Dogra, Grimes’ agent. “We hope to be able to continue to discuss [through] all the issues at the appropriate time.”
Here are some other notes from Dimitroff's radio appearance:
The Falcons are currently in the middle of negotiations with middle line backer Curtis Lofton. The negotiations are moving along but they aren't any closer to making a deal.
Matt Ryan is the franchise QB of the team but they are not currently in the process of extending his contract. They will move forward with an extension when they feel it's appropriate.
In terms of John Abraham, he said that every player is going to want as much money as they can get. The Falcons can't accommodate everyone with the exact numbers they are looking for. They are trying to be creative and they hope John will be back with them. TD would not comment on the exact numbers they are discussing with Abraham.
