Today is like Christmas Eve for basketball fans. Unlike trade deadlines in most sports, the last day for deals in the NBA is usually a flurry of activity with star players and draft picks trading hands like poker chips. Here are a few of the rumors floating around the league:
The Oklahoma City Thunder and Phoenix Suns are discussing a trade that would send Marcin Gortat out of the desert of Arizona. The Suns would get back center Kendrick Perkins, Jeremy Lamb and a first round pick. According to Real GM, the deal would give both teams some flexibility in the future as Perkins is signed through the 2015 season while Gortat becomes a free agent in 2014.
Along with the Milwaukee Bucks, the Brooklyn Nets and the rest of the NBA, the Washington Wizards are interested in trading for Josh Smith of the Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks are motivated to move Smith at the deadline because he will be an unrestricted free agent in the offseason and seeks a max contract.
The on-again-off-again trade that would send Kevin Garnett from the Boston Celtics to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for DeAndre Jordan and Eric Bledsoe is apparently off…again. The Clippers have ended talks unless Chris Paul pushes for the deal. If Garnett does get moved, it is likely the Celtics would trade Paul Pierce as well. Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo has been assured by the team that he will not be dealt.
Although the San Antonio Spurs have been linked to trade discussions for Josh Smith and Al Jefferson it seems unlikely that the team will be able to land either player. The Spurs might be looking to make a move but are having difficulty bringing in an impact - and expensive- player because of their salary cap situation.
