NBA Rumors: Could Grizzlies’ Rudy Gay be Traded to Magic, Nets?

The Memphis Grizzlies were expected to do big things this year. Coming off a postseason run where they took down the San Antonio Spurs in the first round and thoroughly challenged the Oklahoma City Thunder in the next, many believed that this team could contend for the Western Conference crown in 2012.

Obviously that didn’t happen.

Memphis had to deal with an assortment of injuries all year long and, while the squad did admittedly look good in spurts, never really seemed like it possessed the same sort of swagger that it had in the season prior. One of the main reasons for this was because it sort of wasn’t the same team as the one that handled business the year prior – that one didn’t feature a healthy Rudy Guy.

The combination of Gay and Zach Randolph was something that gave a lot of people reservations about the Grizzlies before the year even began, and all of those fears were confirmed when the pair never found a sound way to work together productively.

Given how the year ended, it would make sense for Memphis to part ways with one of them.

Who will it be? Per HoopsWorld:

…League sources expect Memphis to shop Gay, who is owed $53,666,790 over the next three years. Gay is no longer considered untouchable, and he could be on the move in the next few months if the right offer comes along.

If Gay does become available this summer, there would be no shortage of teams interested in the 25-year-old. The Golden State Warriors, Toronto Raptors, Brooklyn Nets and Orlando Magic are among the teams who would attempt to trade for Gay, according to sources close to the situation.

Despite how the season ultimately wrapped for them, the Grizzlies have a strong core in place. With a bit of tinkering they could return to the sort of high times they had just a year ago.

Presuming they can get fair value back for Gay.
