NBA Coaching Searches: Van Gundy Set To Interview With Warriors; Kerr, Knicks Talk Contract

You’ve been hearing reports about Steve Kerr likely becoming the next coach of the Knicks for a while now, and it looks more and more every day like those reports are true.

Golden State brass confirmed over the weekend that they are no longer pursuing Steve Kerr as a candidate for their coaching gig because they believe he’ll sign with the Knicks any day. The Warriors are the second team now to say they aren’t interested in Kerr because they think he’s practically a member of the Knicks. The Lakers said the same thing last week.

According to a number of reports, the only reason Kerr isn’t already officially with the Knicks is money. Knicks ownership wants to pay him more like a first time head coach than a proven, A-List candidate.

Expect a deal between the two sides to be done by Wednesday at the latest, though. The NBA draft combine starts on Thursday, and the Knicks will want their next coach to accompany Phil Jackson to scout this year’s rookie class.

So with Kerr all but off the market, who will Golden State look to bring in?

ESPN’s Marc Stein reports that Stan Van Gundy’s first official interview with the team is “imminent.” Stein says Van Gundy is currently Golden State’s “closest thing” to a top target.
