MMA Video: Thiago Alves, Martin Kampmann Talk UFC on FX 2

Publish date:

Before Miesha Tate and Ronda Rousey settle their differences in the cage this Saturday night, UFC welterweights Thiago Alves and Martin Kampmann will do battle in the main event of UFC on FX 2 to sort out their positions in the backlogged 170lbs. weightclass.

Both fighters recently ended slumps and will be looking to not only stay in the win column, but distinguish themselves from the growing list of standout welterweights. Both men possess similar skill sets, with potent striking and very competent grappling skills, so the difference may end up coming down to who wants it more.

Though both men excel in the stand up, Alves demonstrates more power in his strikes than Kampmann and doesn't sacrifice much in technique for it. As a result, Kampmann is looking to fight a smart fight against The Pitbull, hopefully sticking and moving his way past the former title challenger.

"He's got good combinations, he's real good standing," Kampmann says of Alves. "I think he's definitely technical as well and it's gonna make for a good fight. I'm gonna try and pick him apart, I'm gonna stay away from those bombs. Sometimes I have a habit to start slugging it out a little bit, but not in this fight -- I'm gonna pick him apart.

"I think I've fought some of the best guys and I can beat the best guys there is in the division. Now, I'm gonna beat up Thiago Alves and after that you can just line them up, I'm ready."

It's clear that Alves believes himself to have the edge in power as well, predicting Kampmann to shoot for the takedown shortly after getting touched by a stiff shot. And feeling rejuvenated, Alves thinks that Kampmann will be getting hit hard early and often.

"I think he's gonna test his striking skills at first and everything but, definitely as soon as he gets hit he's gonna shoot for a takedown," said Alves. "I found the old Pitbull that was sleeping inside of me, but now he's out there and he's hungry and he can't wait to perform in Sydney."

Alves and Kampmann meet this Friday night at UFC on FX 2 from the Allphones Arena in Sydney, Australia.
