Fedor Emelianenko got his first victory in a long time on Sunday night against American Jeff Monson. Amazingly enough, though, that wasn’t the highlight of the evening. No, the real highlight came when soon-to-be re-Russian President Vladimir Putin hopped into the ring and delivered a fiery message.
Via the Washington Post:
"Today all martial arts fans are having a feast," he began, and then the boos began to descend. Putin stopped, resumed, spoke louder. "We are all grateful to Fyodor Emelianenko, a real Russian bogatyr" - a Russian knight of old - "and not just because he is very strong and has wonderful muscles but also for his character and will, a real Russian bogatyr. I am greeting you, Fedya."
Unfortunately, fans didn’t take kindly to Putin’s entrance and the 20,000 folks in attendance booed him vehemently.
That’ll end well.
