In an interview with MMAWeekly.com Thiago Alves discussed his UFC 130 opponent Rick Story calling him out.
“That’s not my style, I don’t call anybody out. If you want to be the best, you’ve got to fight the best, but I feel flattered in a way that I know he wants to become the champion one day. He wants to fight the best competition out there. But in the same way there’s a little bitter taste in my mouth. Like is this kid for real? He wants to fight me, calling me out like that? Be careful what you wish for. I’m training like a maniac, I’m training like I’ve never trained before. He’s going to get the best Thiago Alves ever, so I hope he’s training his ass off…I’m better with more upgrades than before, but with the experience that I have and everything I’ve learned throughout this process throughout my career, I’m a new Thiago right now. I truly feel like I’m just getting started again. I’m just 27 years old. I’ve got I’d say at least eight years ahead of me, so I’m very, very excited. I feel like a little kid again. He says he wants to stand up with me. Let’s see if he can back up the talk. It’s going to be a very early night for him.”
Yeah, I don’t see Story willing to stand and trade with Alves. That’s suicide. He’ll strike only to look for takedowns. And he may think it’s easy, but only the best wrestlers were able to take Alves down. Josh Koscheck couldn’t even do it. Should be a great fight.
Dana White told ESPN.com that Mirko “Cro Cop” still wants to fight and that the UFC will honor his last contracted fight. “This guy wants to fight again and I owe him another fight. He’s a grown man. If he wants to continue to fight, that’s his right and he still has a fight with me. Do I think he should’ve retired? Yeah. I don’t think he’s in one of these situations like a Chuck Liddell though, where I thought he needed to retire right then. ‘Cro Cop’ and I made a deal and he wants to fight again. I’m going to honor that deal.” Cro Cop probably doesn’t want to end on a loss and he did look good against Brenden Schaub up until the knockout. He may even have been winning the fight with the judges. But, I don’t think the UFC is going to give him an easy one on his way out.
MMAWeekly.com is reporting that the Bellator Featherweight Championship fight will take place this July, when Joe Warren and Patricio “Pitbull” Freire will square off at Bellator 47 on July 23. Freire has been wanting this fight since he gave their first matchup away. He nearly finished Warren in the first round, but he faded away and lost it. That probably won’t happen this time.
UFC officials announced that Alan Belcher will make his long-awaited return to the cage when he takes on Jason MacDonald, and Ultimate Fighter season 11 winner Court McGee will take on Dongi Yang. Both bouts will take place this September in New Orleans as the UFC and Bud Light bring the “Battle on the Bayou” to Spike TV. Both of these fights interest me greatly. I want to see how Belcher comes back from his retina injury, and I really want to see how much McGee has improved.
The UFC announced that Alex “Bruce Leroy” Caceres will meet Leonard Garcia in a featherweight fight on the UFC on Versus 5 card in Milwaukee this August. I don’t know about you, but I really want to see this. Fists will be flying, that’s for sure. Normally I’d say loser gets his walking papers, but I doubt that now. Maybe loser goes to Strikeforce?
