MMA News: Strikeforce, Lawler, Dos Santos, UFC, Shalorus, Caceres

Strikeforce announced that they have extended the contract of another one of their superstars. After signing Nick Diaz to a contract extension, Strikeforce set its’ sights on middleweight Robbie Lawler, and signed him to a new multi-year deal. Lawler will challenge for the Strikeforce Middleweight Championship on January 29 in San Jose when he takes on Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza.

Lawler told that he’s happy with the new deal. “Strikeforce has treated me good, and I am happy to re-sign with them. They have given me an opportunity to fight for the title, and I’m looking forward to that and to fighting any and all of the top 185-pounders.” Strikeforce is acting quick not to let their big names go. Good signing for them, but I don’t know if Lawler should have done this. Sure, he’s fighting for their championship, but the sponsorship money can’t be as much as it would be if he were in the UFC. But I disagree with Lawler saying he’ll be fighting any and all top 185lb fighters. Strikeforce doesn’t have many to speak of at the moment.

According to his manager, Ed Soares, Junior Dos Santos won’t continue to play the waiting game for the UFC. Dos Santos was scheduled to fight for the Heavyweight Championship sometime in the Spring, but with UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez suffering a torn rotator cuff that is going to keep him out of action six to eight months, that’s just not going to happen. Soares stated in a text message to that Dos Santos would not sit around inactive until the Champ’s return. “He is not going to wait six months.” This is just bad luck for JDS. It’s a tough call to take another fight before taking on Velasquez sometime next year. If he waits, he’ll be out of action for nearly a year. If he fights, he could lose (doubt it) but he’ll make money and won’t be rusty when he does fight for the belt. Anyone could be his opponent now. The only thing that makes sense would be Shane Carwin, but I doubt that’ll happen. is reporting that Alex “Bruce Leroy” Caceres will drop to the featherweight division to meet WEC veteran Mackens Semerzier at UFC Fight Night 24 in March. So Caceres and Nam Phan both dropped down a weight class. Interesting. This will be a tough test for the TUF housemante.

Titan Fighting Championship has replaced Todd Duffee in his fight with Abe Wagner with former UFC champion, Tim Sylvia. The bout takes place on Friday, January 28. How does Sylvia keep getting the call to arms? I don’t get it. I guess he’s winning, but he’s beating nobody.

According to a report from, Kamal Shalorus will make his UFC debut UFC in March at UFC 128 in New Jersey, where he’ll meet New Jersey native Jim Miller. I don’t get this match-up at all. Miller will probably win, but he should already be next in line for a title shot.
