Strikeforce officials have announced that their welterweight champion, Nick Diaz, will be staying on board for the foreseeable future, signing a multi-year contract extension with the organization. Nick Diaz commented on the signing.
“I’m looking forward to continuing my career with Strikeforce. When I first got here, there weren’t a lot of great 170 pound fighters for me to fight, but that’s definitely changed. There’s a lot of really good fighters in the division now and I’m ready to fight anyone who thinks they can beat me.” Diaz is scheduled to defend his Welterweight Title on January 29 when he takes on Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA. Ummm, what? This is a complete shock to me. I would have bet the house that he was jumping ship to the UFC. Especially after he blasted the UFC’s welterweights. Outside of Cyborg and Paul Daley, Diaz has no fights I’d want to see in Strikeforce.
Jamie Varner (16-5-2) will not be making a triumphant return to the Octagon when the rest of the WEC fighters join the ranks. PunchDrunkGamer.com is reporting that the former champion, following a recent four fight winless streak, has been released. “I am ready for 2011,” Varner told PunchDrunkGamer.com. “There will be some changes in my game. “It has been a nice ride with the WEC, but it’s time for a change. Perhaps UFC will be in my future down the road…We shall see.” I’m sure he’ll be back if he wins two or three in a row. He has a name and is a pretty good fighter. If he can improve his grappling, he’ll be back in no time.
Fighter’s Only is reporting that Brenden Schaub will now meet Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 128, not Stefan Struve, not Frank Mir. Okay…so are we SURE this time? I think this is a interesting match-up. I like Schaub vs. Mir a little better though.
According to a report from MMAJunkie.com, Shane Roller will meet Thiago Tavares at the UFC on Versus 3 event on March 3. This shoudl be a good fight. Roller went 6-2 in the WEC, losing to Ben Henderson and Anthony Petis, and Tavares looked great against Audinwood.
The UFC will air three preliminary card fights for Saturday’s UFC 125 event on Ion Television. The three bouts that will air are Marcus Davis vs. Jeremy Stephens, Josh Grispi vs. Dustin Poirier and Phil Baroni vs. Brad Tavares. The broadcast begins at 8:55 PM ET. I’ve never even heard of Ion Television. I hope I have it because I really want to watch Baroni/Tavares.
