Originally thought to be scheduled for UFC 128 event, MMAJunkie.com is now reporting that the light-heavyweight matchup between Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and UFC legend Tito Ortiz is getting main-event treatment in March at UFC Fight Night 24.
Ortiz has been on a bad run of luck. After his loss to Matt Hamill, he is now winless (0-4-1) in his past five fights. Nogueira recently suffered a unanimous-decision loss to Ryan Bader at UFC 119. Prior to the defeat, the PRIDE vet was on a seven-fight win streak.
I, for one, can’t wait for this fight. It is shocking that the UFC would put this fight on a “Fight Night” card, but I’ll take it for free any day of the week. Say what you will about Ortiz, but he sells tickets. And Nogueira is a really good fighter who barely lost to Ryan Bader. This fight could easily have been on a PPV card and will bring up the Spike TV ratings when it airs.
Nick Diaz will defend his Welterweight Title against Brazilian striker Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos. The bout will serve as the main event for Strikeforce’s Jan. 29 event at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA. And, as expected, the evening’s co-main event will include Strikeforce middleweight champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza defending his belt against Robbie Lawler. Well, if I could have Nick Diaz vs. Jason “Mayhem” Miller, I’ll take this.
Cyborg is deserving of a shot and is a legit threat to Nick’s title. As for the other title fight, it’s a toss up. Lawler is susceptible to submissions but his stand up is way better than Jacare’s. It should be a close fight, with the winner going to the UFC. Wait, what? Did I just say that? Yes I did. I think both will eventually end up there. It’s only a matter of time.
Cody McKenzie meets Yves Edwards at “UFC Fight Night 23: Fight for the Troops 2.” Hey Edwards, watch out for the Guillotine Choke. Seriously.
Chad Mendes will take on Michihiro Omigawa on the preliminary portion of UFC 126. This should be a fast-paced, exciting fight.
PRIDE and International Fight League veteran Daniel Gracie (5-2-1) will participate in Bellator’s Light Heavyweight Tournament. Using that name to promote. Well played.
