MMA News: Franklin, Griffin, Lesnar and More

1. Carwin vs. Nelson: On Tuesday Shane Carwin tweeted that he was expecting to fight at UFC 125 on the New Year’s Day card and was willing to fight whoever. Well, according to multiple published reports, the UFC has found him an opponent, and is targeting a fight between him and Ultimate Fighter season ten winner Roy Nelson. This fight makes sense, but I don’t think Nelson wants any part of it. I highly doubt Nelson will be able to take Carwin down, and even if, won’t be able to keep him there. And while Nelson has some power in his fists, it’s not Carwin-power.

2. A very tall heavyweight fight: MMAJunkie.com is reporting that 6’11″ Stefan Struve will meet 6’7″ Sean McCorkle at UFC 124 on the December 11 event. Both fighters are coming off of impressive wins, Struve over Christian Morecraft and McCorkle over Mark Hunt. UFC 124 takes place from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on December 11. The card will be headlined by the Welterweight Championship bout between Georges St. Pierre and Josh Koscheck. That’s a lot of height in the cage right there. I’m almost certain that McCorkle pulls this one off. He’s larger and stronger, and will give Struve a lot of problems.

3. Rich Franklin returns to Forrest Griffin: MMAFighting is reporting that the UFC is putting two former UFC Champions against each other. According to the report, Forrest Griffin will square off against Rich Franklin February 5, 2011 UFC 127, the UFC’s Super Bowl weekend card. UFC 127 is expected to take place in Las Vegas and feature the UFC Middleweight Championship bout between Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort. This event is shaping up to be a great one, if the reports are to be believed. Both these guys are rehabbing injuries, so it will be interesting to see who has the most cage rust. If Franklin wins this, he’ll either be one win away, or get a title shot.

4. Robbie Lawler takes on Matt Lindland: Strikeforce officials are putting together a middleweight bout between Robbie Lawler and Matt Lindland when Strikeforce returns to St. Louis on December 4, according to multiple published reports. I like the match-up. Especially for Strikeforce. Both of these guys have “names” and both are entertaining to watch. Lawler probably needs the win more, and as long as he doesn’t start off slow like he did with Babalu, he should get it.

5. Brock Lesnar speaks on training: A quote pulled from tonight’s UFC Primetime, Brock Lesnar seems humble, and yet not. “At any time it can be taken away from you. I don’t take it for granted. I just want to be the greatest heavyweight of all time. And keeping whopping ass. And be the meanest son-of-a-bitch around… I don’t train to my strengths. I train to my weaknesses. What am I not good at? How can I get better?” I love these primetime series. And with Lesnar saying these type of things, it could only mean doom for the rest of the division. I don’t think he’ll ever be beat again. I think Carwin scared him a little standing up, so from now on it’s ground and pound.
