Although it was first reported that Anthony Pettis would be getting his shot at UFC gold, UFC President Dana White has had a change of heart, and has decided to book Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard III next after their split draw at UFC 125 on Saturday night in Las Vegas. “I had the whole Pettis thing with the belt on my mind and so I said, ‘Yeah, Pettis gets the next shot.’ But then when I thought about it more, how can I in good conscience not give that shot to Gray Maynard? It’s a no-brainer. He came in there and he fought his ass off and he deserves that rematch. That was a great fight and they deserve to do it again.” Ummm, I’ll tell you how. Maynard had his shot to defeat Edgar. He didn’t. And, except for that first round, Maynard wasn’t really in the fight. Edgar won the last 4 rounds if you ask me and should’ve been awarded the fight. Edgar got caught in the first round. If that doesn’t happen, Maynard gets completely dominated. Not only that, but Pettis just became a superstar overnight with his ninja kick and defeating Ben Henderson. You have to capitalize on that.
According to a report from Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com, Randy Couture has verbally agreed to a bout with Lyoto Machida at UFC 129 in Toronto on April 30. However, the fight has not been finalized and negotiations are still on-going, but if the fight is set it could serve as the night’s co-main event. Sweet. Not that I think Couture will win, but I at least wanted him to retire fighting someone of Machida’s caliber. But, if he does win, you can bet he’ll get a title shot to retire on. I almost want to see that. I just don’t think he’ll be able to beat Machida.
Junior Dos Santos told Portal Vale Tudo that he wants an interim title shot. “Of course it would be fantastic to face Velasquez at ‘UFC Rio’, in August, but I can’t keep myself one year away from the Octagon only waiting for his recovering… so I do think what would be most fair, would be Dana gives me the opportunity to fight for an interim belt.” Why? What does a interim title do? Nothing. It makes you the #1 contender. He already is.
Brian Stann asked for Wanderlei Silva next during the UFC 125 post fight press conference. “I am fighting in the house that some amazing fighters have fought in and I want to fight some of those guys. No disrespect what so ever, but I really want to fight Wanderlei Silva next, he is a multi weight champion and I would love to fight a legend.” I would love to see that fight. But if he thinks it’ll go like the Leben fight, he’s got another thing coming.
Four fighters earned $60,000 “Fight Night” bonuses for their performances at UFC 125: Resolution.Guida took the night’s “Submission of the Night” for his second round guillotine choke over Takanori Gomi. Stephens’ come-from-behind knockout of Marcus Davis earned him the “Knockout of the Night.” And the “Fight of the Night” went to Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard. I agree with all of these. Especially the “Fight of the Night” award. That might be the fight of the year.
