Jake Shields discussed being a vegetarian MMA fighter and how he’ll defeat Georges St. Pierre at UFC 129 with TheGarv.com. “I was raised a vegetarian, so I’ve never really eaten meat. I tried it, but I didn’t care for it. A lot of people think you can’t be strong without meat, but I’m proof they’re wrong… I feel [not eating meat] is an advantage, so that’s not something I have to think about. I think I train better—my body feels like its efficient. I’ve had a number of training partners who have become vegetarian… I think it’ll be a tough fight [against Georges St. Pierre], but I’ll end it with submission.” I can’t wait for this fight. Perhaps Shields will finally be the one to not get pushed around by GSP. He likes to fight on the ground, so if GSP takes it there, Shields would welcome that. GSP hasn’t fought someone like Shields yet. I can’t wait to see what happens.
According to a report at MMAFighting.com, sources close to Shinya Aoki have suggested that he has been considering retirement following his embarrassing knockout loss to Yuichiro “Jienotsu” Nagashima at FEG’s Dynamite!! 2010 on New Year’s Eve. According to the report, Aoki has expressed a desire to focus on training at the DEEP official gym. The DREAM Lightweight Champion holds a 26-5 record with one no contest in seven years of MMA competition. Retirement? Seems a bit of a stretch for that. He’s only 27 years old. Perhaps some time away from live competition would do him good. But I highly doubt retirement is the way he’ll go. He definitely needs to improve his striking though.
MMAJunkie.com is reporting that Bellator’s season four welterweight tournament field is complete with the additions of season two semifinalist Steve Carl and Jay Hieron. Nice. Signing Jay Hieron is great for the organization. And should theses two meet, it will be a heck of a fight.
UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez underwent successful surgery on his shoulder last week to repair a mostly torn rotator cuff, and is already back in the gym for some lighter workouts, according to his Twitter account. I’m glad to hear it was a success. Hopefully he gets back for his targeted August return.
MMAJunkie.com is reporting that Dennis Hallman has signed a new four fight contract extension with the UFC, following two impressive victories. This is a great signing by the UFC. Even though he’s had his ups and downs, he’s 4-1 in the last two years.
