Brazilian domination is a simple phrase to explain the championship picture in the UFC right now. At Saturday’s UFC on FOX, Junior dos Santos added to the impressive list of Brazilian born champions in the UFC with his stunning 1st round TKO of former champion, Cain Velasquez. While some fans were not happy with the 64 seconds of an hour-long program, dos Santos was emotional after the victory, shedding tears before and during his post-fight interview.
Stunning the world in his UFC debut when he KO’d top 10 Fabricio Werdum, Cigano has marched his way up the UFC rankings, taking all challengers in impressive fashion, culminating in his victory on Saturday.
“I have no words to say what I am feeling. It’s amazing my life, you know,” said dos Santos during his post fight interview.
While mentioning he suffered a knee injury prior to the fight, it didn’t seem to phase the new champion, sending Velasquez down to the mat with an overhand right that landed on the temple of his opponent. Following a barrage of strikes, referee Big John McCarthy stepped in, ending the fight and sending another title to Brazil.
Following UFC on FOX, Brazilians now hold a major stake in the UFC. Along with dos Santos, Anderson Silva and Jose Aldo also own championships in the UFC, with Lyoto Machida having a shot at bringing in another when he takes on Jon Jones.
But Saturday belonged to Junior dos Santos who won the title in his 15th professional fight. At only 27 years old, dos Santos still has a long career ahead of him, with numerous challengers still in place, including the winner of Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem next month.
For now, dos Santos will revile in the opportunity he has been blessed with, and the right to call himself a champion.
