MMA News: Henderson v. Fedor, UFC, Bellator and More

Bellator officials have announced that Bellator Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez will defend his title this fall against season four lightweight tournament winner Michael Chandler at Bellator 54 on October 15. The event will air live on MTV2 from the Boardwalk Hall Ballroom in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Alvarez went on to say,

“Fighting this close to home on this big of stage is awesome. I’ve never lost a fight in the States, and I certainly don’t plan on losing this one. I’ve never had this much time to prepare for a fight, and you’re going to see that preparation on display October 15…I watched the Lightweight Tournament very closely, and was really impressed with a lot of the competition. Knowing that Chandler is my opponent, I’ve already gone back and started to watch film, and I’ll be ready. He brings a really good pace, and it’s going to be a great fight.”

I don’t think Alvarez has anything to worry about. Chandler is a pretty good fighter, but most people rank Alvarez in the top five of lightweight fighters. Chandler isn’t on that level. Dana White needs to put up the cash and get this guy into The Octagon soon.

Dan Henderson talked about his fight with Fedor Emelianenko in a blog on Yahoo! Sports. “I don’t feel outmatched or small against Fedor. I have a plan to not go right through his power, but I feel I can hurt him with shot and can move him around with my wrestling without needing to prove I am physically as strong as him. I’ve fought bigger, powerful guys before and used my wrestling to move them about. I think I can use the clinch to control him and will be looking to use my wrestling more than in other fights where I went pretty much for the right-hand KO. I will be looking to knock him out with the right, but I know I will need to set it up and use my wrestling more than in my last couple of fights…He’s got a big right hand like me, so I am looking forward to standing and banging with him when it comes down to it. I think what has won me a lot of fans and a lot of fights is that I got to finish those fights. Fedor or not, I wouldn’t have wanted this fight if I wasn’t going to go in there to finish him.” If Fedor comes into the fight in shape, he’ll most likely win. He’s not overly large compared to Henderson, but he’s still the bigger guy with better grappling.

The UFC has announced that they have added another fight to the UFC on Versus 6 card this October, Yves Edwards vs. Rafaello Oliveira. This should be a fight that Edwards should win. Oliveira hasn’t had much luck in the UFC. But, I said that about the Edwards/Stout fight. Edwards was winning, but then the BOOM came.

According to multiple reports, a welterweight bout between Daniel “Ninja” Roberts and T.J. Waldburger is on its way to the preliminary card of UFC Fight Night 25 “Battle on the Bayou.” This should be an interesting fight. Roberts is most likely fighting for his job and Waldburger is looking to rebound from a TKO loss to Johny Hendricks.

DREAM officials announced that their lightweight champion Shinya Aoki will clash with former WEC lightweight champion “Razor” Rob McCullough in a non-title affair at DREAM.17, which is set to take place on Sept. 24, 2011. This is a pretty good fight for both guys. McCullough is no pushover and if he can keep it standing he’ll have a decent shot at pulling off the upset.
