MMA: Brock Lesnar, Junior dos Santos to Coach Ultimate Fighter

The 13th season of popular MMA show The Ultimate Fighter will feature a former UFC champion and a heavyweight No. 1 contender in the coaching positions.

On Tuesday it was announced that Brock Lesnar and Junior dos Santos will lead a young pack of promising fighters on the latest reincarnation of The Ultimate Fighter series. Much like they have over the course of the past few seasons, the personalities and name values of the chosen coaches will overshadow some of the initial plot lines of the show.

Lesnar, the former heavyweight champion, was defeated by Cain Velasquez for his title in October. While dos Santos is scheduled to be the next viable contender for Velasquez’s belt, their match has been delayed because of the champ’s partially torn rotator cuff.

This opportunity will no doubt give dos Santos a bit of exposure to the general public before his sure-to-be highly publicized championship bout.

The latest season of The Ultimate Fighter will feature welterweights. This, of course, continues the show’s time-honored tradition of focusing on a single division at a time.

It will be interesting to note the difference in fighting methodologies taught by Lesnar and dos Santos to their respective teams. Whereas Lesnar is a born wrestler who loves to take his opponents down early, dos Santos prefers keep his opponent standing so that he can beat them down with vicious blows.

The rosters for both teams have not yet been announced.
