One of my favorite lines in any movie is from This Is Spinal Tap. You know the one I’m talking about, “These go to 11.” On Tuesday the Texas Rangers outdid Nigel Tufnel and his rock band misfits by going to 12.
Behind another incredible pitching outing, Texas widened its AL West lead over the Los Angeles Angels to five games as the young All-Star sensation, Alexi Ogando, tossed eight shutout innings with the Rangers winning 7-0 for their 12th win in a row. Ogando who gave up four hits, walked three and struck out five, improved to 10-3 with a 2.72 ERA in his first season as a starter.
So much for missing Cliff Lee. If the Rangers had Lee would they be giving up negative runs? The Rangers pitching staff now has four shutouts in their last six games and over the 12-game winning streak Texas has outscored their opponents 77-24 further solidifying their position in the MLB Power Rankings.
The Rangers’ 12-game winning streak is the longest in the Major Leagues since the Boston Red Sox had a 12-game run in 2006. The franchise’s longest winning streak was 14 straight, from May 12-27, 1991.
How great was the Adrian Beltre signing? The guy plays an exception third base and is hitting .270 with 20HRs and 74 RBI. Josh Hamilton, Beltre, Michael Young, Nelson Cruz. That’s one heck of a middle of the lineup to have to get through a few times a game without giving up a few runs, especially if there are runners on base in front of them.
