MLB Magic: Red Sox-Orioles, Rays-Yankees, Braves-Phillies

Wednesday night was arguably the most spectacular, intense and riveting regular season night in the history of MLB. Jonathan Papelbon imploding with two outs in the 9th against the Baltimore Orioles as the Tampa Bay Rays were coming from a 7-0 deficit with just six outs left to go against the Yankees. Are you kidding me? Evan Longoria, Dan Johnson and then Evan Longoria again, oh my! That was surreal!

I still don’t know what was more shocking, the Boston Red Sox blowing nine game lead in the loss column in September, or the chain of events that took place in Baltimore and Tampa on Wednesday night. In Boston this will forever be known as “Wednesday night Massacre” and in Tampa it will go down as the “Wednesday Night Miracle”.

The Atlanta Braves for their part were just as bad as the Red Sox as they also blew a nine game lead in the loss column in September too. Craig Kimbrel who had such a wonderful rookie year couldn’t get the last three outs as against the Phillies as the Braves season slipped away. Meanwhile in St. Louis, Cardinals veteran Chris Carpenter showed that he’s still an ace tossing a 9-inning complete game shutout with just two hits, one walk and 11 K’s as the Cards triumphed 8-0 over the Houston Astros completing a fantastic September and capturing the NL Wild Card spot. Much like in Boston, in Atlanta this will forever be known as “Wednesday night Massacre” and in St. Louis it will go down as the “Wednesday Night Miracle”.

Congrats to the Rays and Cardinals and condolences to the Red Sox and Braves. This was truly the best / worst night of baseball, depending on where you live or who you were rooting for.

So there you have it boys and girls, in the ALDS round it will be the Tampa Bay Rays vs. Texas Rangersand the Detroit Tigers vs. New York Yankees. In the NLDS round it will be the St. Louis Cardinals vs. the Philadelphia Phillies and the Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Milwaukee Brewers.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and predict that the Milwaukee Brewers will win the whole enchilada and that Zack Greinke being this year’s post season hero. I’m pretty certain that’s not the most common of predictions. When it happens, remember that you heard it here first. And if it doesn’t, just forget I said anything...
